Sodium/Potassium Ratio

Ringer's lactate solution was developed by Sydney Ringer, an English physiologist, after he had experimented with frogs. He proved that sodium regulates the contractions (systolic) of the heart, and potassium regulates the heart muscles at rest (diastolic). He also discovered that calcium is necessary to regulate the two elements.

Ringer's lactate solution contains sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K) in a balanced ratio.

Ringer's lactate solution is used by doctors and in hospitals all over the world to replace fluids. When used, it maintains an adequate kidney function and due to the balanced electrolytes, will neither raise nor lower the blood pressure.

Changing proportions of any of the three will raise or lower your blood pressure, depending on what is out of balance.

When the sodium level is high, the calcium goes into the bone to be stored. When the potassium level is high, calcium goes into the cells.

Potassium and sodium are the traffic directors in the body; they tell the elements where to go, to the cell or bone.

If your sodium is high, your veins are up. If your potassium is high, and the sodium is low, your veins are down.

The cell must contain the proper elements, in the proper ratio, in order to produce the specific cells that make up the brain, heart, muscle, and other tissues.
