In a feature article, Life Magazine said: "No one communicates more successfully about children than Dr. Lendon Smith." And communicate he did. And not just about children. The concepts he helped to pioneer apply to people of all ages. As one of the most visible and popular doctors in the country, Dr. Smith maintained a leadership role in many areas of medicine, taking his message to the people through writing, lectures, seminars, media and personal appearances. Being ahead of his time occasionally made Dr. Smith somewhat controversial. His early studies with hyperactive kids brought him worldwide acclaim. Yet his nutritional approach was viewed suspiciously by many in the medical community. The same was true of his best seller "Feed Your Kids Right". Of course, these nutritional approaches are standard medicine today. Dr. Smith was also the first to break the taboo regarding sex education on network television. His ABC After School Special, "My Mom's Having A Baby," set the standard and is today one of the most widely distributed sex education presentations in the country. Dr. Smith's use of humor was part and parcel of his firm belief in the influence of humor on health and productivity. His early work with The Laugh Clinic was a forerunner of many current programs emphasizing humor in the workplace. Perhaps the most important aspect of his success was his ability to get his message across. His wit, charm, relaxed style, and sometimes outrageous sense of humor made him an audience favorite for nearly four decades. He was one of the most "asked back" guests in radio and TV. Almost anyone who has published a well-promoted book has done the usual guest show circuit, but Dr. Smith did more than 60 Tonight Shows (with Johnny Carson) and was the featured guest on The Phil Donahue Show twenty times over a ten year period. He was also the recipient of Television's coveted Emmy Award for excellence in programming. Dr. Smith was as in step with the 90's as he was with the 60's, 70's and 80's. Our aging society, productivity in the U.S., AIDS, the financial crisis in the health care system, and the tribulations of parenting were among his topics. When it comes to communicating information that can make a difference in your life "The Baby Doctor Delivered." Dr. Smith practiced pediatric medicine in Portland, Oregon for many years before his retirement, and was a prolific author or co-author with such books to his credit as Feed Your Kids Right, Feed Yourself Right, Encyclopedia of Baby and Child Care, Hyper Kids: A Workbook for Parents and Teachers: How to Recognize and Respond to Hyperactivity, Attention Deficit Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Dr. Lendon Smith's Low-Stress Diet Book, Straight Talk on Raising Young Children: Understanding and Guiding Your 1 to 6 Year old, The Family Encyclopedia of Natural Healing, How to Raise a Healthy Child, and his most recent book, co-authored with Joseph Hattersley, The Infant Survival Guide: Protecting Your Baby from the Dangers of Crib Death, Vaccines and Other Environmental Hazards. Dr. Smith was also professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, and offered pediatric advice on his own TV program. In his last months Dr. Smith campaigned on radio and TV against use of an addictive drug to treat hyperactivity, learning difficulties and more. He also tackled co-author assignments for new books-to-be. He was a striver to the end. Dr. Smith passed away in November 2001 at the age of 80 from complications after heart surgery. His daughters Tracy and Nancy, his sons Tim and Eric, along with nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive him. Curriculum Vitae
