Impulsiveness in Children

Behavior is a chemical event in the body that is part conditioning/training and part bio-chemical. Lack of patience, for example, may come from the inability to learn patience because of a imbalance in magnesium.

Magnesium is a key element in behavior, affecting motor reflex. For example, magnesium in the ocular fluid determines how rapidly the iris reacts to light. A person with high magnesium has a slow reacting iris when exposed to light. A person with low magnesium has a quick reacting iris when exposed to light and so is sensitive to light. Children with low magnesium have quick motor reflexes with the inability to slow down and control themselves. These children may be easily startled by a tap on the shoulder or a door shutting. The irritability of the motor reflex in magnesium deficient children may prevent them from actually being able to sit still, much less be patient.

Impatience and lack of control are characteristics of a child we would call impulsive. An impulsive child may need behavioral training, but without measuring and correcting the chemical imbalances, there will be minimal success in correcting the problem. Chemical imbalances such as magnesium deficiencies are, for the most part, due to imbalances in the diet. Most special needs children have food sensitivities which lead to restrictive diets which add to the problem. A comprehensive blood test with appropriate supplementation as well as making adjustments in the diet will eliminate food sensitivities and slow down the child so he/she is able to learn and behave.

Fundamentally, we are what we eat and the choices we make in our diets impact physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Diet alone, however, will not create a fully developed, emotionally well-balanced person. Love, consistency, discipline, training, and education, combined with diet, allow a human being to grow to full potential.
